He went forward after a successful attack to reconnoitre and adjust the new line in full view of the enemy and under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire. He showed marked ability in carrying out this work, and obtained valuable information which enabled dispositions to be made to ensure the line against immediate counter-attacks."
