The RIC was under the command of Captain O'Beirne and the Devonshires were under Lieutenant Frederick Charles Yeo. Yeo quickly gave the order to his men to go over the ditch and into the fields behind the present shrine. The men on the Ballinattin Road now had to bear the full brunt of the fighting. Nicky Whittle later said that the hail of bullets that began to spatter all around them was so intense it was cutting the grass from the top of the ditches around them.
